Pro-Life, Pro-Family Movie Attracting Supporters to Advent Film Group's 'Film Day'

Pro-Life, Pro-Family Movie Attracting Supporters to Advent Film Group's 'Film Day'

MEDIA ADVISORY, Dec. 4 /Christian Newswire/ -- In an unusually open movie set, Advent Film Group (AFG) is inviting supporters, students, and filmmakers to attend a special AFG Film Day during its week-long "pickup" filming for "Come What May" scheduled for late January 2008. This first feature film from AFG has attracted attention because its cast and crew are predominantly homeschoolers and the movie features Patrick Henry College (PHC), a national powerhouse in debate and moot court competition. The movie centers on pro-life and pro- family issues fought in the U.S. Supreme Court and National Moot Court Championship.

Ex-Discovery executive and AFI Producing Fellow George Escobar, a homeschooling dad, launched AFG to train students who will one-day direct big- budget films with moral integrity.

Escobar says Advent's goal of rebuilding culture for Christ using an army of homeschoolers is beginning to draw support from the Christian community, pro- family, and pro-life groups across the country and abroad.

Escobar adds, "Our micro-budget movie, similar to "Facing The Giants" in scale and scope, fights its battle in courtrooms not gridirons, but the heart of the movie is the same: to put God at the center of our lives, win or lose.

Pickup filming is standard practice in Hollywood. It allows filmmakers to re-shoot scenes, add effects, and get additional footage for the film's final cut and for promotional purposes. What is unusual is AFG's open-set film schedule.

"It includes a special AFG FILM DAY. We're inviting supporters nationwide to join us, to be in the movie, and meet cast and crew. Final date, time, and location logistics are still in the works, but it will be a day between January 21-31, 2008 in Purcellville, VA," Escobar explains. "You must sign-up at our website: www.adventfilmgroup.com as we can only accommodate a limited number of invitations. It will be first-come, first-serve."

During AFG FILM DAY, attendees will receive movie posters, postcards, music CDs, and take photos with the cast. Many homeschooling families interested in filmmaking are coming," Escobar says. "This gives them a first-hand look at a movie set and perhaps join us for the next four movies we have scheduled over the next two years."

About AFG
Advent Film Group was founded in 2007 by Christian filmmakers to champion the mission and vision of Patrick Henry College and other like-minded organizations to shape our culture through media. AFG productions uphold the Biblical values that define America's founding. See the movie trailer at www.adventfilmgroup.com.

SAT-7 KIDS, THE FIRST ARABIC CHRISTIAN CHANNEL FOR CHILDREN TO LAUNCH ON DECEMBER 10, 2007

SAT-7 KIDS, THE FIRST ARABIC CHRISTIAN CHANNEL FOR CHILDREN TO LAUNCH ON DECEMBER 10, 2007

£500,000 Matching Grant Available To Help Make this Christmas Present to the Middle East Possible

LONDON. November 29, 2007/3mnewswire.org/-

After more than a year and a half of planning, fundraising, and creating new programmes, producers working on the SAT-7 KIDS channel are in the final stages of preparing for its first broadcast. SAT-7 KIDS will go live exactly one minute after midnight on December 10th 2007, and will be available for Arab children to watch when they wake up. “Our teams in Lebanon and Egypt have been working very hard for this day. They are extremely excited and anticipate a huge response,” says Rita El Mounayer, Director of Arabic Programming.

One hundred million children under the age of 15 live in the Arab world and at least half have access to satellite television.* This huge population of young people represent the future of the region, one currently torn by conflict, hatred and a lack of hope. Children living in the midst of strife often turn to TV as a place of safety where they can escape. TV can provide hope, new ideas and a place where young viewers often open their hearts to Christ’s message.

“Our goal is to provide a safe place for children, where they can grow, learn more about the teachings of Christ, and see the fun and bright future that God can provide for them,” says Rita.

Currently at least six other Arabic children’s channels are targeting this audience. Many of these purvey anti-Christian ideas and attitudes and some Arabic channels produce and broadcast violent programmes for children, some of which glorify martyrdom, even by children themselves. SAT-7 KIDS is the first and only channel to make quality, locally made, Christian children’s programming available 24 hours a day.

SAT-7 CEO Terence Ascott says, “On SAT-7 KIDS, viewers will see wonderful programmes for children which will include messages about love, forgiveness and turning the other cheek. We will be broadcasting cartoons, dramas, Bible stores, game shows and many kinds of programmes that will attract children and help them learn about God’s love for them and how they can walk with the Lord.”

SAT-7 KIDS will enable children to watch Arabic Christian programming any time that is convenient for them, across the five time zones in the Arab world. Entire families in the Arab world will be impacted as many parents will also be drawn to sit with their kids and take in the positive messages broadcast on SAT‑7 KIDS.

Funding is still urgently needed for this project, to pay for new equipment needed to help make the extra programmes for the channel, which will potentially reach half of the children in the Arab world! To help meet SAT-7’s needs, a supporter has pledged to give one pound for every two pounds given to the ministry, up to £500,000! If you are interested in helping reach the over 100 million children of the Arab world, please consider giving a special gift this Christmas to SAT-7 KIDS. To qualify for this special match, donations must be received by December 31st!

"Half of the homes in the Arab world today have Satellite television. This is a unique opportunity for such households to bypass the censorship on all kinds of media and to hear the Gospel," adds Mr. Ascott.
***
SAT-7 KIDS can be watched on Hot Bird 6 Satellite, 13 Degrees East, Transponder 157, 11,642 MHz, Horizontal Polarity, 27.5 MSym/sec, FEC ¾

Huckabee on Abortion: Shares Fred Thompson's Views

Huckabee on Abortion: Shares Fred Thompson's Views

MC LEAN, Va., Nov. 25 /Christian Newswire/ --

In February 1995, Huckabee supported revising the GOP abortion plank to let states decide their own abortion laws.

"The issue divides strongly committed pro-life and pro- choice Republicans but is not a central issue to most other Republicans. A possible platform revision long under discussion would say the Republican Party, 'unlike the Democratic Party, does not stand for abortion on demand and is basically a pro-life party.' In the spirit of federalism, the proposed GOP revision also would replace the abortion amendment with a statement saying the issue should be left up to the individual state legislatures to deal with as each sees fit. 'That's exactly what we have looked for, and if it's left up to the states, more of them are going to put some restrictions on abortion,' Arkansas Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee said in an interview after appearing on a conference panel yesterday." (Ralph Z. Hallow, "Conservatives Hold Fire On Abortion," Washington Times, 2/12/95)

And in an April 2006 interview with the blog "Right Wing News" Huckabee indicated that abortion decisions should be left to the States.

John Hawkins [Right Wing News]: Switching gears again, do you think we should overturn Roe v. Wade?

Mike Huckabee: It would please me because I think Roe v. Wade is based on a real stretch of Constitutional application -- that somehow there is a greater privacy issue in the abortion concern -- than there is a human life issue -- and that the federal government should be making that decision as opposed to states making that decision. So, I've never felt that it was a legitimate manner in which to address this and, first of all, it should be left to the states, the 10th Amendment, but secondly, to somehow believe that the taking of an innocent, unborn human life is about privacy and not about that unborn life is ludicrous. North Korean Christians Arrested; Current Status Unknown

North Korean Christians Arrested; Current Status Unknown

BARTLESVILLE, Okla., Nov. 8 /Christian Newswire/ -- In a highly unusual press conference in Pyongyang in September, the National Security Service of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announced the arrest of "foreign spies" and "native citizens working for a foreign intelligence service." The Voice of the Martyrs (VOM), a ministry serving Christians in restricted nations who are persecuted for their faith, announced today that those arrested in North Korea were in fact Christian believers and not spies.

The security service spokesman at the press conference, Li Su Gil, said that those arrested "carried out the missions by means of diverse espionage equipment." He did not name any of those arrested.

VOM has identified the following North Korean Christians who have disappeared and are believed to have been arrested by government authorities:

Onseong, North Hamgyong Province:
Chul Huh, male
Chun-Il Jang, male, 39
Young-Su Jin, male, 32
Myung-Chul Kim, male, 36
Nam-Suk Kang, male, 48
Young-Yae Lee, female, 37

Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province:
San-Ho Kang, male, 36

Cheongjin, North Hamgyong Province:
Mi-Hae Park, female, 30
Suk-Chun Suh, male, 29

These North Korean Christians had started a portrait photography studio to help support themselves, and had registered their businesses with appropriate government authorities. According to VOM sources working in North Korea, they were not involved in espionage activities. It is believed that equipment taken by the government was in fact photography equipment used in their portrait work.

"Following Jesus Christ is considered treason in North Korea, where the government mandates that worship is reserved for deceased dictator Kim Il Sung and his son, the current dictator, Kim Jong Il," said Todd Nettleton, spokesperson for VOM. "The Voice of the Martyrs is proud to stand with Christ's followers in North Korea, and deeply concerned for the well-being of our brothers and sisters there. We call on the North Korean government to release these Christian believers, who were involved in legitimate business activities to support themselves and their families."

The Voice of the Martyrs has been actively involved in helping North Korean Christians for decades. Among the projects the ministry has carried out for North Korea is the launch of thousands of "scripture balloons," mylar balloons filled with helium and printed on either side with scripture passages. VOM has conducted other projects to help North Korean Christians but cannot discuss details publicly to protect the safety of VOM workers and contacts inside North Korea.

VOM sources do not know the whereabouts of the arrested believers. It is possible that they have already been tried and executed.

"We pray that they are alive," said Nettleton. "But we know it is possible that they have finished their race on earth and gone on to their eternal reward in heaven. We encourage Christians everywhere to pray for our brothers and sisters in North Korea, who must constantly face the threat of arrest, torture and execution simply for living out their faith in Jesus Christ."

Christians are encouraged to write letters protesting the arrest to the DPRK delegation to the United Nations:

Prominent Beijing Rights Defense Christian Lawyer Li Heping Kidnapped and Tortured

Prominent Beijing Rights Defense Christian Lawyer Li Heping Kidnapped and Tortured; Two Beijing Christian Activists Held Under House Arrest

MIDLAND, Texas, Oct. 3 /Christian Newswire/ -- China Aid Association learned the prominent Christian human rights lawyer in Beijing Mr. Li Heping was kidnapped and tortured for nearly six hours on September 29, 2007. Meanwhile, two Beijing Christian activists have been held under house arrest since Oct 1, 2007.

Mr. Li is a partner of Beijing Global Law Firm and also serves as an editorial board member of CAA's journal Chinese Law and Religion Monitor. In a statement to the international community entitled "May the Light of Rule of Law Shine on China --- Personal Statement from Attorney Li Heping on Being Beaten," attorney Li shared some details on how he was kidnapped and tortured.

"Thank God for giving me an opportunity as an attorney to experience and witness personally the harshness of electric torture..."

CAA President Rev. Bob Fu, a friend of Li, talked with him over the phone on October 2, 2007. According to Mr. Li, a moderate and well respected criminal law and human rights defense lawyer, at 5:30 PM on September 29, 2007, after Li Heping got off work and came out of the office building, he saw two sedans without license plates in the parking lot. Then, a group of unidentified people covered his head with a cloth bag and forced him into one of the sedans. There were four people in the car and the two people in the back seat placed Attorney Li Heping in the middle. The car traveled for about an hour. Attorney Li felt that the car traveled on a section of highway and then went down a slope. After he got out of the car, he went down many steps. Li Heping guesses that this could be a basement. There were about ten people there, whom he had never met. They demanded that Attorney Li Heping undress completely, which he refused. Then they began to beat Attorney Li Heping brutally. After they hit him to the floor, they undressed Attorney Li by force down to his underwear. The head of this group was about 40 years of age and the others were in their 20s and 30s. They grabbed Li by the hair, kicked him, hit him with water bottles, and slapped him in the face. The most vicious form of torture was chasing and hitting him with electric batons. Asked about their identities by Li, one of the interrogators said they are members of Beijing State Security Bureau. They yelled to him with standard Beijing accent: "All your family should get the hell out of Beijing. Sell your house and car and get out of Beijing!"

On and off for six hours, Attorney Li Heping who was brutally beaten and insulted to the fullest degree. He endured the torture and never regarded the perpetrators with hatred. At last, these security agents gave Attorney Li Heping an ultimatum: "Let us give you another option since we know you don't want to get the hell out of Beijing. Then, just work as an attorney, but you must not mess up in some things." After that, they again put a black head-cover on Attorney Li and threw him into a wooded area in Xiaotangshan in Changping District of Beijing. Attorney Li had to walk for a long time to get to the highway where he got in a vehicle and went back to the city.

When he checked his belongings he was carrying with him, he found his attorney certificate, portable hard disk, access card to his law office, SIM card of his mobile phone, business card holder, paper version of the notebook, some materials on the case, and other objects had all been taken away. The hard disk of the computer had been totally formatted and a large amount of data was lost. When some were beating him, other agents must have been examining and copying the data in his computer.

At the end of his statement, attorney Li said "I long for the rule of law and the peaceful progress of the society. I told them at the site of beating that I wouldn't hate them. I wish the light of rule of law would shine on China and all my Chinese compatriots, including those who beat me."

Invited by CAA, along with six other human rights lawyers and activists from China, Li Heping paid one week visit to the US from October 10-17, 2005. During that visit, Mr. Li met with senior leaders from the US government and Congress including Ambassador John Hanford and Mark Lagon of the State Department, Dr. Will Inboden of the National Security Council of the White House, Congressman Chris Smith, Congressman Frank Wolf, Senator Sam Brownback, as well as senior staff at CECC (www.CECC.gov), USIRF (www.uscirf.gov), and on the House International Relations Committee.

Meanwhile, CAA learned that two Beijing house church activists have been held under house arrest since October 1, the Chinese National Day. Pastor Hua Huiqi and Liu Fenggang who were released in this July and February after serving 6-month and 3- year imprisonment respectively, were not allowed to go out of their homes. Each of their houses has been surrounded by two dozen police. Some PSB officers were even staged on top of Pastor Hua's roof in order to prevent anyone from coming in or going out. Early this morning, October 3, 8 PSB officers broke Hua and his wife's bedroom windows, and then cut off the electricity to their house. Pastor Hua was told his 77- year-old mom Ms. Shuang Shuying has been serving a two year sentence as a hostage of Hua's rights defense activism. She was beaten severely recently without medical care and is now dying in her prison cell. Hua today issued a letter entitled as "Pray for the Chinese Police" in which he called upon the international community to pray for the Chinese leadership and police to "soften their hearts and release my ailing mom so that the Gospel can spread in China freely."

"The brutal act of state terrorism against attorney Li and the two pastors sent a chilling signal to all the peaceful rights defenders in China. This definitely represents a new low for the environment of human rights and the reality of the rule of law in the city hosting the 2008 Olympics,' said Bob Fu, "if China can't tolerate a moderate lawyer like Mr. Li, who should have any confidence in the Chinese leaders' other international commitments?"

Global Prayer Event to Confront Terrorism, War, Violence this October in Washington DC

Global Prayer Event to Confront Terrorism, War, Violence this October in Washington DC

Event features Congressman Chris Smith, Presidential Candidate Alan Keyes, Rev. Clement Machado of the Vatican, and others

MEDIA ADVISORY, Sept. 18 /Christian Newswire/ -- the International Week of Prayer & Fasting Coalition has seen a huge expansion of its original mission and continued growth. Originally established to promote a "culture of life" around the world, this coalition has witnessed a transformation of sorts since it began.

Coalition Chairperson Maureen Flynn says the expansion of the group's mission is ongoing. "This is actually a coalition, a grassroots effort of groups from all over the world that we have been working with for over 15 years, "she notes, "and as we have approached more problems in the world, especially with terrorism and the decline of the culture of life, this grassroots movement has grown."

Flynn says the International Coalition organizes prayers for world peace, works to promote culture of life issues and sets up "prayer cells" to counter global terrorism. "The more we have these terrorist cells all around the country, all around the world," she explains, "the more we need to counteract with prayer groups. We call it the Prayer Network of Counter- terrorism."

In the past 34 years, we have allowed another form of terrorism, the killing of the innocent unborn child. There are 1.3 million abortions a year in the United States! Globally, we have allowed child sacrifice. In the Old Testament the ultimate sin that brought about judgment on nations was the sin of child sacrifice. As Blessed Teresa of Calcutta has said we must fight abortion with adoption. She has also said, "the poorest of the poor is the unborn child."

This International Coalition is coordinating the 15th Annual International Week of Prayer and Fasting and its mission is to promote a Culture of Life which includes three national events in Washington, D.C. The goals of the International Week of Prayer and Fasting are: the conversion of nations, an end to abortion and to build a culture of life. The Coalition is asking for people to participate as individuals, families and parishes by organizing and offering the following: fasting, daily Masses and prayer to include: Holy Hours, Rosaries, Divine Mercy Chaplets and Confession.

Saturday, October 6th - Youth and Young Adult Festival in preparation for World Youth Day 2008 at Catholic University of America, Pryzbyla Center, Washington, DC. Speakers include: Bishop Sam Jacobs, Ryan O'Hara of Youth Arise, Jason Evert - Chastity Speaker and others.

Sunday, October 7th - Culture of Life Awards Banquet, Georgetown University Conference Center with 2008 Presidential Candidate Dr. Alan Keyes - Keynote Speaker, Raymond Arroyo - EWTN, Congressman Chris Smith and Eduardo Verastegui - star of the new movie BELLA.

Monday, October 8th - Eucharistic Prayer Day at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (9am-5pm) with Rev. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, Rev. Clement Machado of the Vatican, Bobby Schindler (Terri Schiavo's brother) and several other speakers.

Proclamation by the President: Family Day, 2007

Proclamation by the President: Family Day, 2007

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 /Christian Newswire/ -- The following text is a proclamation by President Bush:

Families are the cornerstone of our Nation. On Family Day, we underscore our dedication to strengthening America's families and recognize the importance that the bonds between parents and children hold for the future of our country.

Parents and family members are the first and most important influence in a child's life. Families offer a stable and nurturing environment by providing love, guidance, support, and comfort. They help young people gain the skills they need to succeed in life and the courage and drive to realize their dreams. By caring for and spending time with their children, parents instill lifelong values and help build a better America.

My Administration is committed to supporting American families. We are working with faith-based and community organizations to promote healthy marriages, responsible fatherhood, and positive youth development. When children are connected to family, community, school, and places of worship, they are more likely to make good choices and reach their full potential.

Families help prepare children for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century by encouraging them and insisting on high standards. Strong, loving families help young Americans grow into successful adults and build a Nation shining with optimism.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 24, 2007, as Family Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day by engaging in activities that strengthen the bonds between parents and children.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twentieth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty- second.

37 Ancient Greek Images of Noah Published on the Web
Ancient Art Depicts Mankind's History, not Myth

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, September 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- Solving Light Books announced today the publication to its Web site of 37 images of Noah from ancient Greek art. These images of the Greek version of Noah reveal his role in Greek art as the known historical figure in contrast to whom the artists depicted, and boasted of, the rapid growth of their man-centered religious outlook. Ancient Greek artists and poets called Noah "Nereus" (meaning the "Wet One"), and also referred to him as the "Salt Sea Old Man."

The Web presentation has six parts:

Part I consists of 37 images of Noah cropped out of their sculpted and vase-scene contexts so that the viewer can examine the similarity of the images in one place.
Part II presents a short pictorial review of what Greek religious art chronicles and celebrates-the end of Noah's rule, the resurgence and triumph of the way of Kain (Cain), and the exaltation of man as the measure of all things.
Part III features vase-scenes wherein the hero- rebel Herakles (the Nimrod of Genesis and Gilgamesh of the Sumerian epic) threatens Noah, brings him and his rule to a halt, and pushes him out of the way.
Part IV presents an ancient vase-art tradition wherein Herakles is pictured as seizing Noah's authority in the form of a creature known as Triton.
Part V features vase-scenes in which Noah reacts stoically to the abduction of his daughter, Thetis, by the Zeus-worshipper, Peleus.
Part VI presents scenes in which the ancient artists depict Noah as an unwilling and disheartened witness to the key events leading to the triumph of Zeus-religion.

The creator of the Web presentation, Robert Bowie Johnson, Jr., is the author of "Athena and Eve," "Athena and Kain," "The Parthenon Code: Mankind's History in Marble," "Noah in Ancient Greek Art," and a 950-slide PowerPoint presentation on the true meaning of ancient Greek art. "An enormous amount of information about mankind's origins hides in plain sight in the art of ancient Greece. These many images of the Greek version of Noah, now made available to the public, are just a small part of it," Mr. Johnson said.

Evangelical Christian Leader in Charlotte Invites Gay and Lesbian Clergy to a Public Forum But is Snubbed

CHARLOTTE, NC, Sept. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- For the last three weeks, Dr. Michael L. Brown, director of the Coalition of Conscience, has been reaching out to the clergy of gay and gay-affirming churches in greater Charlotte. He has invited them to participate in a public forum and to present their views on "Can you be gay and Christian?" this Thursday night, September 20th from 7:00-9:30 PM, hosted by FIRE Church in Concord, North Carolina. But after contacting the leaders of more than a dozen gay and gay affirming churches, he has not found a single member of the clergy willing to participate.

For Brown, who has gone out of his way to state that the forum will not be a platform for gay bashing, the unwillingness of the local clergy to participate is striking. "For the last two years, young people affiliated with the gay organization Soulforce have visited Christian college campuses, protesting their policies and calling for public dialogue. Earlier this year, Joe Solmonese, the head of the Human Rights Campaign, issued me a challenge in the presence of 1,500 people. Yet when we invite gay and gay- affirming clergy to participate in a public dialogue, we cannot find any takers."

Brown is still hoping that some of the invited clergy will choose to participate in the forum, but even in their absence, he expects that the presentations that will be given and the extensive interaction with audience Q & A will prove enlightening. "We handed out over 500 invitations at Pride Charlotte on August 25, and we're hoping for some excellent questions from the audience. Even the fact that an evangelical congregation is opening its doors to this dialogue is significant in and of itself."

Brown holds a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Literatures from New York University and is a published biblical scholar. He has appeared on numerous TV shows, including Donahue, Prime Time Justice, Fox News, Hard Copy, and Inside Edition. His work has also been featured in newspapers such as the Washington Post, the Charlotte Observer, and the Baltimore Sun.

There will be a news conference before the forum, Thursday, September 20th, at 6:15 PM, at FIRE Church, 4323 Concord Pkwy S., Concord, North Carolina. At the news conference, Brown will share the list of gay and gay-affirming churches that he invited, along with the transcription of the personal challenge he received earlier this year from Joe Solmonese.

Despite Court Ruling, the 'F-Word' is Indecent

Despite Court Ruling, the 'F-Word' is Indecent

Legislation would correct court ruling allowing profanity on TV
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- Representative Chip Pickering (R-Mississippi) introduced the Protecting Children from Indecent Programming Act today to restore authority to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to determine broadcast decency standards when children are most likely to be watching television. Recently, the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals overrode parents and decided that children are not harmed or influenced negatively by television programs airing the "F-word" or the "S- word". Rather than allowing the FCC to do its job by enforcing the law, the court legislated against the express will of the people by ruling that indecency on television is appropriate for children.

"Broadcasters seem intent on making parents' job of protecting their children's innocence nearly impossible. This bill will help restore parents' ability to provide wholesome entertainment without indecent material invading their living room through the TV," stated Wendy Wright, President of Concerned Women for America (CWA).

CWA Director of Legislation and Public Policy, Shari Rendall, said, "It is imperative that we uphold standards of decency in our society, particularly when it comes to our children. An activist court does not have the right to strip decency standards from broadcasting, particularly when the standards are overwhelmingly supported by American families.

"Indecent broadcasters and the Second Circuit Court have no business determining what is appropriate for children. Parents are the first defense against indecency. The FCC has a responsibility to aid parents by policing obscene images and indecent language. The least that broadcasters can do for American families is respect parents."

Concerned Women for America is the nation's largest public policy women's organization.

The World Race: An Amazing World Mission Trip

The World Race: An Amazing World Mission Trip

GAINESVILLE, Georgia, Sept. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- In January of this year, 50 North American Christians left the comfort of their homes and possessions in search of the abundant life of faith and adventure. They're calling it a pilgrimage - an opportunity to find themselves and really experience God outside of the box.

The World Race was birthed in 2005 as a pioneer missions effort to encourage young people to move away from American comfort and into a year-long discipleship program. It was founded by ministry entrepreneur Seth Barnes, founder and executive director of Adventures In Missions, a short-term missions organization in Gainesville, Georgia.

"This is not just another mission trip; it's a commitment to a transformational discovery process," Barnes says. "The World Race taps an ancient human compulsion to take a spiritual pilgrimage. A whole new rite of passage is waiting to be born, and millions of young people are waiting to respond."

Participants travel to 11 different locations, spending a month working with local churches in the area to serve the needs of the community. They "race" to each location and start each month with friendly competition; for example, in Peru, they had to do a scavenger hunt around Lima. However, the vast majority of time spent in each location is focused on ministry and service. This is only the second year of the Race, and already hundreds are flocking to be a part of this experience. Many more are expected to follow.

However, the vast majority of time spent in each location is focused on ministry and service. This is only the second year of the Race, and already hundreds are flocking to be a part of this experience. Many more are expected to follow.

Barnes predicts, "Thousands and thousands of young people are going to eventually embark on this pilgrimage around the world, because it provides a context in which they can discover themselves and who they are in Christ... and how they fit in the world. Many people in their twenties are looking for answers. They've got more questions than they've got answers. And what better place to find them than as you go on a pilgrimage around the world?"

With nothing but a backpack, these young travelers live simply, traveling from place to place in hopes of discovering a faith that is authentic and vibrant. They depend on the hospitality and generosity of strangers, just as Jesus instructed his followers to do in Matthew 10.

World Racers are transformed by this unique mission trip and in effect, become world-changers themselves. '06 and '07 participant Chad Mast, from San Diego, CA, remarks on his travels with this Race: "How can I possibly make a difference in this life? God has given me a glimpse into this world as to where he wants me to begin to find out. He has let me touch families that have suffered from hurricanes in Guatemala. He has shown me the life of persecuted orphans in India. He has shown me a revival in the Catholic church of Poland. He has shown me what AIDS is doing to the entire continent of Africa. I will never be the same. I never want to be the same."

This year, three World Race groups will be sent out on this missionary journey, and four more are scheduled to leave in 2008. To find out more, visit: www.theworldrace.org.

£16.25million confiscation order

£16.25million confiscation order

LONDON. September 19, 2007/3mnewswire.org/- Ian Leaf who was convicted of cheating the Inland Revenue of £54 million in taxes has been ordered to pay £16.25 million at Southwark Crown Court as a result of a successful confiscation application.

The confiscation hearing concludes an eight year investigation by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) which resulted in a 10 year jail sentence for Leaf.

Robert Alder, HMRC, Head of Restraint and Confiscation said:

"Our colleagues in the Revenue & Customs Prosecution Office (RCPO) will whenever appropriate pursue confiscation orders against those like Mr. Leaf who attempt to line their pockets by depriving the country's essential services of vital resources. Confiscation orders ensure that such criminals are deprived of the financial advantages they seek to gain over the vast majority of honest people."

Leaf's fraud was highly complex and centred on a company purchase scheme which involved the purchase of thirteen UK Subsidiary companies which were subject to UK tax. The companies were used solely for fraudulent purposes. Leaf was convicted of thirteen charges of fraudulent trading on 21 November 2005.

NOTES FOR EDITORS
1. Ian Andrew Leaf, DOB 29/11/53, a British national, resided in Switzerland since 1987. Last known address: Chalet Ivouette, CH1936, Verbier, Switzerland

2. Leaf was found guilty of 13 counts of fraudulent trading, contrary to section 458 of the Companies Act 1985: one count for each of the 13 companies acquired using this particular scheme. The offence of fraudulent trading requires the prosecution to prove that the defendant was knowingly carrying on a business for fraudulent purposes.

3. When purchased by Leaf, as well as outstanding tax liabilities from past profits, the companies held enough cash to pay the tax owed. Rather than using the money to pay the tax Leaf created fictitious documents from a bank registered in the Pacific island of Nauru which was controlled by him and appeared to show that the companies had borrowed huge sums of money. The resulting fabricated interest payments were offset against tax. It was also falsely claimed that these loans were used to undertake massively profitable foreign exchange deals which were not subject to UK tax out of which were paid dividends. Leaf then falsely used these to reclaim corporation tax rightly paid by the companies before he purchased them.

4. In respect of the 13 companies included in the indictment the loss of tax exceeded £54 million with a further £22 million reclaimed but not repaid by the Inland Revenue to Leaf.

5. RCPO was created by Royal Assent on 18 April 2005. An independent prosecuting authority, RCPO reports directly to the Attorney General, and is responsible for prosecuting some of the largest drug and fraud cases in the UK.

Maryland Court Rejects Counterfeit Marriage Push

Maryland Court Rejects Counterfeit Marriage Push

WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 /Christian Newswire/ -- In a close 4-3 decision on Tuesday, the Maryland Court of Appeals, ruling in Conaway v. Deane, smacked down arguments by the ALCU, nine homosexual couples and a lower state circuit court which had earlier ruled that Maryland's law reaffirming the true definition of marriage as the union between one man and one woman amounted to unconstitutional "sex discrimination."

Matt Barber, Policy Director for Cultural Issues with Concerned Women for America (CWA), said, "In this case, the court has simply reaffirmed what reasonable people have known all along, that the best interest of children should always trump the selfish demands of special interest groups. The court has protected the gold standard by wisely holding that the state has a rational basis for protecting marriage as between one man and one woman. Although it's not always possible, it has been proven that the best environment for children is with a mom and a dad.

"The strategy of liberal extremists hasn't changed," said Barber. "The ACLU and their homosexual activist cohorts have once again abused the judiciary in an effort to circumvent both the legislature and the clear will of the people. Thankfully, at least for now and in this instance, they've been unsuccessful. But they won't quit until the institution of marriage is redefined into oblivion."

Pointing to a recent ruling by a county judge in Iowa, which overturned that state's marriage protection law, Barber continued, "As we recently saw in Iowa, it only takes one renegade judicial activist to unilaterally and arbitrarily impose his will upon the people. This case in Maryland reminds us that the only way to ensure that the institution of marriage is protected is to pass both state, and ultimately federal, marriage amendments."

Evalena Gray, State Director for CWA of Maryland, was cautiously optimistic. "We're thankful for the favorable ruling by the Maryland Court of Appeals," said Gray. "Still, we must continue to be vigilant. We know the ACLU and their activist clients will be back. They always come back. And when they do, we should be ready."

Concerned Women for America is the nation's largest public policy women's organization.
